PORTER SVC

Entergy Transmission employees Edwin L. Mack and Duyshant Shah, residents of Conroe and the Woodlands respectively, perform final inspection of the first Static Var Compensator Entergy has installed within its Texas service territory. The unit went into service on April 17, well ahead of summer peak demand.

Located at Porter, in Montgomery County, the SVC controls the inherent voltage fluctuations that occur within any power system under different conditions. This improves transmission and distribution performance, which bolsters the reliability of service to Entergy Texas customers throughout the company's East Texas service territory.

This unit is one of several elements in Entergy's Western Region Phase II transmission expansion plan. This project, along with the others, will provide Entergy's customers Texas, with more stable, robust bulk power delivery through Entergy's Transmission lines.

The transmission line in the background is the 230kV line 822 that serves the Woodlands and Conroe areas. It went into service last summer.

By installing the SVC at a suitable point within Entergy's network, the ability to transfer power increases, and power losses are reduced, while a smooth voltage profile is held under different network conditions.

Construction on this unit began late last year and was completed on time and on budget with no safety incidents.
