New Transformer to Serve Peak Demand in DeSoto County

Entergy Mississippi recently energized the new Twinkletown substation in DeSoto County, adding more distribution capacity to the fastest-growing area in the state.

The first transformer at the substation went into service on June 28 and will enhance and improve reliability for customers during peak summer demand. The 33 MW substation can be expanded to 99 MW as needed over the next few years to keep pace with the area’s growth.

In addition to serving the electrical needs of DeSoto County, the project will significantly increase property values in Walls, where the substation is located.

"This represents a major investment to improve service to customers in north Mississippi," said Pat Nelson, regional customer service manager. "It’s also an investment in the future of DeSoto County and in Walls."

Nelson mentioned other construction projects planned in the area – such as the new school in Walls and the proposed $2.7 billion Riverbend community development– that will continue to spur growth in DeSoto County.

Located near the intersection of Highway 61 and Church Road, the Twinkletown substation is on the company’s 230 kV transmission line that runs between its Freeport and Robinsonville substations.

The project also included construction of a 230 kV line into and out of the substation, three Entergy feeders, and one feeder serving the Coahoma Electric Power Association.

The substation design allows the option to add a third transmission line eastward that could ultimately connect to the company’s Getwell substation near Hernando. As demand grows, this would provide service to distribution substations located along the transmission line.

"A big part of serving customers means thinking ahead and planning for their future needs," Nelson said. "The new substation factors into economic development, and Entergy Mississippi wants to be a part of DeSoto County’s continued growth and success."
